Geelong Fibre Forum 2023 - part the second

Gorgeousness by Wilma

And then this happened . . .

It is very satisfying when you have developed a process and your students really run with it. A New Starting Point is a workshop I developed in 2012 when I was playing with old papers and scraps of painted Bondaweb - and of course, a bit of sparkle. The process became a great 1 - 2 day workshop that can be slotted into a 5 day workshop quite nicely. The great thing is your work doesn't have to look like anything, there is no pressure. The torn and layered process creates a great background to print onto. And then you can iron your work onto a heavy interfacing to create boxes, book covers . . more of that tomorrow.

The 'backgrounds and prettys' process creates luscious layers with lovely torn edges. I think it is my favourite process out all the techniques and processes I use. I start the students with my way of creating layers, then they are let loose to develop the process their way.

Who would have thought a pile of papers ...

. . .  could turn out like this . .

There was some beautifully considered work with beautiful embroidery . .

Jenny starting to embroider her book cover.

There was also some rather splendid collage . .

Painted papers torn and layered with printed papers

And then there were the prints on the newly created 'backgrounds and pretties'. This piece was eventually ironed onto S133 to create something rather wonderful.

A 'pretty' has been printed onto with a printing block made in the class

This is a fabulous example of a baby wipe print applied to a colour toning background with the beginnings of some hand stitch.

A printed baby wipe bonded onto a decorated Decovil shape

A fab sample of torn papers, painted Bondaweb and transfer foil.

The sample above shows quite perfectly that you don't need a lot of different colours to create a beautiful piece of work. You need to choose between colour - or texture!

A wonderful layered collage with gilding flake and transfer foil.

So . . as you can see the work was quite varied right from the start. Then we started to iron the work onto the heavier iron on interfacings to make boxes, book covers and vessels . . . I will write about that tomorrow . .
