Taking sections of your Journey design exercise

The tracing of the section of the Journey |
It is a great feeling to have finished filming The Journey to Design workshop. And we already have students enroled and working away. I just love it.
The tracing on the right (above) is the section I took of my moth Journey. On the left are the 2 printing blocks I made from the design. The positive and negative parts of the design.
I enjoyed playing with the blocks, it has been a while since I made any.

The 2 blocks and a try out on some cartridge paper |
I always clean my blocks with baby wipes . . .

From the left - a scrunched up baby wipe for the final cleaning of the blocks and 3 of the wipes I used flat on the blocks to clean them and get extra prints. |
I ironed Bondaweb into the back of the second baby wipe print. Then cut away the white areas (negative space). I then peeled off the backing paper and ironed the applique design onto the left hand baby wipe. it made a great background.
I then back stitched around the applied shape in a toning green thread to give it a little definition. I love how the design 'bleeds' in and out of the background, encouraging you to look closer. I know I could use a contrasting coloured background, but I do love the more subtle effect.

A heart shaped tracing |
Just to remind you, you don't have to keep making straight sided blocks, though it is good to do so the first couple of times. Just in case you need to flip and mirror your designs.
Then I thought - Ohhhh!!! Bondaweb and foiling . .
So I traced the heart shape and design onto the backing paper of the Bondaweb.
I then cut carefully along the pencil lines and separated the pieces. The pieces were then put back together and ironed onto a piece of white satin I had on my table.
Once this had cooled down I removed the backing paper from the 'positive' part of the design . .
I then ironed gold transfer foil onto the exposed Bondaweb. I then removed the other pieces of backing paper, laid red transfer foil over the whole design and ironed it onto the newly exposed Bondaweb.

Ta da!!! You can still see the design that this came from. |
I love how you can use your designs in so many different ways.
