Each Aahilya tour is different, they have their own personalities . . The Bihar Retreat January 2026

I am very fortunate to be a group leader for Aahilya Holidays. It is a wonderful opportunity to discover more of the world, and especially, to understand more about the history of the world through it's textiles and architecture. Learning more about the Silk Road, The Golden Road, The Cotton Road and The Paper Road, I am falling in love with the stories of Central Asia and all the artifacts, crafts and layers of architectural design.

Islamic architecture in Uzbekistan started me off and now I am researching further afield. Reading more history books I am beginning to understand there is no one architectural style. All are created from ideas, experiments and new ways of building down the centuries. Invading armies captured artisans with skills not known to the invaders. These artisans were put to work to build mosques, churches and palaces layering their methods and designs with existing skills across the known world. Building layers of stories . .

One of the beautifully decorated buildings we will be exploring on the tour. Note the central decoration above the gate. . .

This is a close up - I was intrigued by the shapes forming the decoration . .

And closer still - to find little fish shapes finishing off the decoration
I LOVE them

You can see Islamic design in Christian churches, Christian designs in Islamic architecture. This has become known as Mudejar architecture.

From Wikipedia -
The term Mudejar art was coined by the art historian Jose Amador de los Rios y Serrnao in reference to the  Mudelars, who played a leading role in introducing Islamic derived decorative elements into the Iberian Christian kingdoms. The Mudéjars were the Muslims who remained in the former areas of Al-Andalus after the Christian Reconquista in the Middle Ages and were allowed to practice their religion to a limited degree. Mudéjar art is valuable in that it represents peaceful co-existence between Muslims and Christians during the medieval era, although all Muslims and Jews in Spain eventually were forced to convert to Christianity or exiled between the late 15th century and the early to mid 16th century.

And of course, these layers of design are fantastic inspiration for our own work. We can isolate areas of design and start to layer fabrics and stitch. Maybe draw up designs in your sketchbook.

Stitched Stories in Muzaffapur -
So we have stories in the architecture and we will also witness the stories of the women embroiderers of Muzaffarpur. Stitched stories of local village life. Picking the mango harvest, catching fish in nets, the birds in the trees, whatever sparks an embroiderers interest.

another detail

I actually own this glorious little wall hanging, it's about16" x 16" Isha brought it back from Muzaffarpur. I love the story of the fishing boat and storing the fish in nets.

This is another detail of a larger piece showing the milking of a cow

There will be several workshops on this tour, working with local artisans, apart from the embroidery, we will also be trying our hand at Mithala painting.

There will be several more workshops, to see the full itinerary - click here

I think what I am most looking forward to, apart from the architecture, is working with and chatting to the local women. Being inspired by what is around us. It really is going to be fabulous.

Just imagine exploring a village that is so beautifully decorated.

Whilst I am excited about all my trips with Isha and Aahilya Holidays, I must admit to being very excited about this trip. It began when Isha started sending me these images from a recce she was doing for one of my trips in 2027. As the images started to arrive I could see a specialist tour forming in my head, it all made sense. And Isha has made it happen.

Bookings have already started, so if you would like a bit of new inspiration for 2026 and you love to explore roads less traveled - do join us!
